Field to Fork: New Year’s Resolution’s
It's hard to believe that it is already nearing the end of January! I could have sworn that just last week there were fireworks, popped corks and parties to celebrate the New Year. Gyms have filled up quickly, diets have been started, and old habits have been changed. Social media is filled with every intention of positivity, change and “new year, new me” vibes.
The tradition of New Year’s resolutions is as old as time. According to Jones-Schenk, this tradition dates back to the Roman Empire where Julius Caesar established a new calendar every January. (2022)
So what happens as the weeks continue? The gym numbers decrease, the fast food gets reincorporated and those old habits seem to pop up again. Now this isn’t true for all. But for many, we seem to quickly return to our old ways. This often leads to feelings of failure, sadness, frustration, etc. In 2021, roughly 50% of Americans wanted to increase their overall health and wellness. This includes increased fitness, weight loss and improved nutrition. Why is it that so many of us want to get healthy but fail to do so? The answer is simple, because diets do NOT work.
Why?
- They make you miserable! I mean, who wants to deprive themselves of the things they want and love? Not me!
- They cause Binge eating. Depriving ourselves of our favorites usually results in overindulgence the next time we have them.
- They starve us. More often then not, these fad diets require extreme caloric and nutrient deficits. Let’s be honest, eating JUST a bell pepper and cream cheese for a meal really isn’t that nutritious.
- They are confusing! One second “this food” is good for us. The next second it is no longer good for us. Diets make it impossible to know what is “safe” to eat and what is not.
Okay, so if diets do not work, then what?
One of the number one reasons why diets do not work is because they fail to address the root cause of the issue. Think of a diet like a Band-Aid, it is simply a quick fix. Addressing the core issue and adopting the skills needed, is where success lies.
Are you ready to stop with the diets and finally learn the skills to be successful? If you answered yes to this question, contact me at JM Nutritional Counseling!
